About Resizeify
Our Mission
Resizeify exists to give everyone — students, designers, job seekers, small business owners, and everyday users — a fast, free, and genuinely private way to resize and compress images directly in their browser, without surrendering their files to a third-party server.
Most online image tools work by uploading your photo to a remote server, processing it there, and sending the result back. That model is slow, raises legitimate privacy concerns (especially for passport photos, ID documents, and signatures), and introduces an unnecessary dependency on network quality. Resizeify takes a different approach: your files never leave your device.
How It Works
Resizeify is built entirely on browser-native Web APIs — no plugins, no server round-trips, no proprietary runtime required. Here is what happens when you use the tool:
- File reading via the File API. When you drop or select an image, the browser reads it directly from your local file system into memory. Nothing is sent over the network at this step.
- Decoding via an HTML
<img>element. The browser decodes the raw image bytes (JPG, PNG, WebP, or HEIC via heic2any) into a bitmap that can be drawn onto a canvas. - Pixel manipulation via the Canvas 2D API. The decoded bitmap is drawn onto an off-screen
HTMLCanvasElementat the target dimensions. For file-size mode, a binary search algorithm iterates over quality settings to find the highest quality that still meets your target — all within the same canvas, without any network calls. - Output via Blob URLs. The canvas exports the processed image as a Blob, which the browser exposes as a temporary local URL. Clicking Download triggers a standard anchor-download from that local URL. When you navigate away, the Blob URL is revoked and the data is garbage-collected.
The entire pipeline runs inside a single browser tab. It works offline after the page first loads, works on mobile browsers, and produces results in under two seconds for most images.
Technology Stack
- Next.js 15 (App Router) — server-rendered React framework for fast page loads and strong SEO.
- React 19 — component model for all interactive UI.
- Tailwind CSS v4 — utility-first styling with a CSS-first configuration and full dark-mode support.
- HTML5 Canvas API — the core image processing primitive, built into every modern browser.
- heic2any — open-source JavaScript library for client-side HEIC decoding, enabling iPhone photo conversion without a server.
- JSZip — client-side ZIP generation for the bulk image resizer, so you can download up to 20 processed images in a single archive.
- next-themes — system-aware dark/light mode with localStorage persistence and no flash of unstyled content.
Privacy by Design
Privacy is not a feature we bolted on — it is a structural property of how Resizeify works. Because all processing happens locally, there is no server that could store your images even if we wanted to. This makes Resizeify safe to use with sensitive documents such as passport photos, signature images, government application forms, ID cards, and medical images.

Who Built This
Resizeify is an independent project maintained by a small team of developers who believe useful tools should be free, fast, and respectful of user privacy. If you have a feature request, found a bug, or just want to say hello, visit our Contact page.
