When do you need to reduce image file size?
Email attachments
Most email clients cap attachments at 5–25MB. Compressing photos before attaching keeps your emails light and deliverable.
Web & blog images
Large images slow down page load times and hurt SEO. Aim for under 200KB for hero images and under 100KB for thumbnails.
Profile photos
Platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and job portals typically require profile photos under 100–500KB.
Government & form uploads
Passport photos, ID scans, and document uploads for official forms often have strict file size limits of 50–200KB.
E-commerce product images
Product image galleries load faster and convert better when each image is under 200KB.
How Resizeify reduces image file size
- 1Upload your image. JPG, PNG, and WebP up to 50MB are supported.
- 2Set your target file size in KB or MB — or pick a quick preset like 50KB, 100KB, or 1MB.
- 3Resizeify runs a binary search over quality settings to find the highest quality that meets your target.
- 4Preview and download your compressed image. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
- What does reducing image file size mean?
- Reducing file size means making the image take up less disk space. This is done through compression (lowering quality for lossy formats like JPG and WebP) and sometimes by reducing the pixel dimensions. The goal is the smallest file that still looks acceptable.
- What's the difference between resizing and compressing an image?
- Resizing changes the pixel dimensions (width × height). Compressing reduces the file size without necessarily changing dimensions — by increasing the compression ratio of lossy formats. Resizeify can do both: it adjusts quality first, then dimensions only if needed.
- Which format gives the smallest file size?
- WebP typically produces the smallest files at equivalent visual quality, followed by JPG. PNG is lossless and generally produces larger files — it's best for graphics, screenshots, and images with text.
- Can I reduce the size of a PNG without converting it?
- PNG uses lossless compression so there's a floor on how small it can get without converting formats. Resizeify can still reduce PNG file size by scaling down dimensions. For aggressive size reduction, converting to WebP or JPG is recommended.
- How precise is the target file size?
- Resizeify gets within a few percent of your target in most cases. The binary search algorithm runs up to 10 iterations to find the optimal quality setting. Exact byte-perfect targeting isn't possible due to how image encoding works, but the result will be at or below your target.
- Is there a limit to how many images I can compress?
- No. Resizeify is completely free with no limits on the number of images you compress. Process as many as you need — just upload them one at a time.
- Is my image data private?
- Yes. All processing happens in your browser using the Canvas API. Your images are never sent to any server. Once you close or refresh the page, the image data is gone.
