How to resize images for Instagram feed

  1. 1Upload your photo — JPG, PNG, or WebP up to 50 MB. Your image never leaves your browser.
  2. 2Select an aspect ratio: Portrait 4:5 for maximum feed real-estate, Square 1:1 for a clean grid, or Landscape for cinematic shots.
  3. 3Choose a fit mode: Contain/Pad keeps the full image and adds white bars; Cover/Crop fills the frame by center-cropping.
  4. 4Set the output format. JPG at 92% is recommended for photos. Use PNG only for graphics.
  5. 5Click Resize for Instagram, preview the result, then download.

Frequently asked questions

What are the correct Instagram feed image dimensions?
Instagram supports three feed aspect ratios: Portrait 4:5 (1080×1350 px) — the tallest allowed and generally the best-performing because it takes up more vertical screen space in the feed. Square 1:1 (1080×1080 px) — the classic grid option. Landscape 1.91:1 (1080×566 px) — for wide cinematic shots. All export at 1080 px wide, which is Instagram's standard display resolution.
What is the difference between Contain/Pad and Cover/Crop?
Contain (pad) scales your image to fit entirely within the target frame, then fills any empty space with a white background. No part of your image is cut off. Cover (crop) scales your image so it fills the entire frame, then center-crops whatever doesn't fit. Nothing is padded — every pixel of the output frame is filled with image content. Choose Contain when you need the full photo visible; choose Cover when you want a tight, edge-to-edge fill.
Which format should I use for Instagram — JPG or PNG?
JPG (JPEG) is the right choice for almost all Instagram photos. Instagram re-compresses every uploaded image anyway, so starting with a high-quality JPG (90–95%) gives the best final result. Use PNG only for graphics, illustrations, or screenshots that contain text with sharp edges.
Will Instagram crop my image further after I upload it?
If you upload an image at exactly the supported aspect ratio (4:5, 1:1, or 1.91:1) Instagram will not crop it further. This tool outputs images at exactly those ratios, so what you see in the preview is what will appear in your feed.
What quality setting should I use?
For JPG output, 90–95% is the sweet spot for Instagram. Instagram itself re-encodes uploads at roughly 85% quality, so there is no visible benefit to going above 95%. The default of 92% produces excellent results while keeping file sizes reasonable.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. All resizing happens locally in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your photo never leaves your device and is not stored anywhere.
